Video sound has stopped working on my iPad

Sometimes the sound on video playback on an iPad stops working for no apparent reason.  The iPad will still play sound on certain apps but not on others, it may also ring but the speaker won't work for anything else.

The following are some suggestions as to how to fix this problem:

  • Check that the loud / silent switch on the exterior of iPad is switched to silent mode which is orange. If so, move the switch back to loud mode - this may seem obvious but this switch often is set to silent without the user noticing.
  • Similar to the above step, you can also try deactivating the mute within the iPad itself.  Simply slide from the bottom screen going upwards and once you have done that, a control bar will appear.  Press the mute on/ off button.
  • Restart the iPad by holding the power switch and home button together for 10 seconds. This will restart your iPad, you will not lose any data but this can often remove temporary glitches that have occurred with software updates.
  • Reset the iPad by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings. Before you do this ensure you have backed up your device to the Cloud or iTunes as you will loose all data on your iPad. This is similar to the above step but is more thorough.
